What do we all find hard about reading the Bible?
I randomly asked a bunch of regular churchgoing twenty-somethings a very simple question: What do you find hard about reading the Bible?
They gave me remarkably simple answers back. Most of their answers fell into one of three categories:
- Motivation: Why should I read the bible?
- Understanding: What’s the Historical Context of the Bible?
- Function: How do I interpret and apply the Bible to my life?
I then asked a follow up question: If you took a simple Bible course, what would help you most?
That was an even simpler set of answers: Encouragement. Understanding and Application.
Why is this Bible Course Helpful?
So I designed a really simple course that did three things:
- Explained The Big Story: Broke Down the whole Bible into one continuous story
- Made the Bible into a Simple Timeline: Created two diagrams that showed the timeline of the Old & New Testaments.
- Gave the Historical and Geographical Context: Created a map that showed all the major places, empires and nations mentioned in the Bible
What Other People Thought
I called this course ‘The Beginner’s Guide to Breaking Down the New Testament’ and taught it to 6 people online. They absolutely loved it. So, I taught it to 40 more people. Here’s just some of their feedback:
“Having historical context has really helped my biblical understanding”
“Visuals were great.”
“Having background information on the movement of the church and why the gospel was so controversial”
“The Bible doesn’t feel as overwhelming, the key narrative helps make the books have more of a purpose and can be read knowing where is fits into context.”
